Mangaluru, Aug 17: Two men have been arrested for allegedly harassing and obstructing two women police constables during the Mosaru Kudike festival procession held in Thokkottu as part of Sri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations.

The arrested have been identified as Deepak, a resident of Asoigoli, and Kiran, from Thokkottu.

A case has been registered against them under Sections 126(2), 132, 74, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Incident details

The incident occurred around 11:50 pm during the Mosaru Kudike procession when tableaus and a Nasik band reached the Inner Town area. A group of youths, dancing enthusiastically in front of the band, reportedly obstructed the movement of the procession, delaying the tableaus behind and causing inconvenience to women, children, and the general public.

As part of the security detail, two women police constables approached the group and politely requested them to move forward to ease the crowding.

However, Deepak allegedly responded in a vulgar and disrespectful manner, showing obscene gestures with his fingers, verbally intimidating the constables, and deliberately blocking their way. He reportedly said, “Who are you to tell us what to do? The police are good for nothing,” in an attempt to provoke and insult them.

Kiran, who was present at the scene, also allegedly supported Deepak’s actions.

Both were immediately detained and arrested.

A case involving outraging the modesty of women and interfering with public duties has been filed under relevant provisions of the BNS.

Police confirmed that strict action would be taken to ensure the safety of officers on duty, especially during public events.
