Chennai, Aug 20: Once hailed as the next Sachin Tendulkar, young Indian opener Prithvi Shaw is determined to rebuild his cricketing journey after a series of setbacks in recent years. The 25-year-old, who was part of India’s 2018 U-19 World Cup-winning squad, struck a commanding century on debut in the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament against Chhattisgarh, signalling his intent to make a strong comeback.
Speaking after play on Tuesday, Shaw admitted he was “starting from scratch” again but expressed confidence in his abilities.
“I don’t mind coming from scratch again because I’ve seen many ups and downs in my life. I’m confident in myself and my work ethics. I hope this season will go really well for me as well as for my team,” Shaw said.
The Mumbai cricketer, who had once enjoyed strong backing from legends during his Under-19 days, acknowledged that the same level of support was missing at present. However, Shaw emphasised that he has returned to the fundamentals of his game.
“I just went back to basics, doing things that I used to do in Under-19 days, which got me to the Indian team. Practicing more, gym, running… small things that I’ve been doing since I was 12 or 13,” he explained.
Shaw, who made a dazzling Test debut for India in 2018 with a century against West Indies, has since struggled with form, injuries, and off-field issues. Despite that, his recent performances underline his determination to stay relevant in the highly competitive domestic circuit.
Cricket watchers believe Shaw’s hunger to succeed and disciplined approach could yet script a strong comeback, as India continues to look for solid opening options across formats.
