New Delhi, Aug 20: The Independence Day weekend box office battle between Hrithik Roshan’s War 2 and Rajinikanth’s Coolie saw both films open with massive numbers, but the following days have told a different story — not only in terms of collections but also ticket pricing.
Both films released on August 14 to a thunderous response, each crossing the Rs 50 crore mark on opening day. But while Rajinikanth’s Coolie continued to dominate with a strong hold, Hrithik Roshan’s War 2 witnessed a sharp slowdown despite aggressive ticketing offers.
On discount Tuesday, tickets were priced as low as Rs 99, yet War 2 managed only Rs 8.25 crore on Day 6, lower than its Day 5 collection of Rs 8.75 crore. Its total stands at Rs 192.75 crore, reported Sacnilk. Meanwhile, Coolie fared slightly better, minting Rs 9.50 crore on the same day and taking its overall tally to Rs 216 crore.
The contrast in ticket pricing was stark. On opening day, War 2 tickets in North India ranged between Rs 180–Rs 250 for regular shows, while premium recliners touched an astonishing Rs 2,620. Multiplex rates typically stood at Rs 300–Rs 800. Coolie, however, benefitted from Tamil Nadu’s regulated ticket pricing — kept between Rs 57 and Rs 200. Elsewhere, prices soared: in Bengaluru recliners were sold for Rs 1,500–Rs 2,000, while in Mumbai, premium seats cost up to Rs 1,130.
Adding to the cinematic buzz, Yash Raj Films’ Saiyaara — starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda — continues to enjoy a dream run. Released on July 18, the romantic drama has touched Rs 325.11 crore, collecting Rs 31 lakhs on its fifth Tuesday. YRF’s promotional offers, including a 50% BookMyShow discount and special Rs 9:30 am student-friendly shows, helped the film’s sustained performance.
Directed by Ayan Mukerji, War 2 is part of YRF’s ambitious spy universe, featuring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani in lead roles.
