Mumbai, Aug 24: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the suspected dowry-related death of a 26-year-old woman in Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Wakad area and has demanded a detailed report from the Maharashtra Director General of Police within three days.
The NCW, reacting to media reports that the woman died by suicide due to dowry harassment, has directed state police to investigate the case promptly and fairly. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, in a letter to the DGP, stressed that if the allegations are confirmed, the accused must be arrested swiftly and support must be extended to the victim’s family. A detailed Action Taken Report has been requested within 72 hours.
On the same day, Rahatkar spoke at the ‘Bharatiya Veerangna’ event organised in Mumbai, celebrating the legacy of courageous women who have inspired the nation. She described them as symbols of strength and policy who continue to serve as a source of inspiration in contemporary times.

Rahatkar also chaired a post-'Shakti Samvad' meeting with State Women's Commission members from across the country, addressing challenges they face and proposing actionable solutions. She emphasized that while obstacles in the journey toward women’s empowerment are inevitable, they must be met with clarity and determination.
Describing "Shakti Samvad" as a powerful symbol of shared resolve, she said unified efforts by all state commissions can foster a stronger, safer, and more empowering environment for women across India.
