Puttur, Aug 25: A pair of wild elephants that had been sighted in the Nekkiladi–Biliyur region over the past two days were seen wading in the Netravathi River at Uppinangady on August 24 morning. The jumbos were caught in a state of confusion as large crowds gathered on both banks of the river to watch them.

On August 23 night, the elephants had entered the plantation of Surya Subrahmanya Bhat and later moved through Saralikatte, Piligoodu, Ambottu and reached Andetadka in Ilantila village, from where they entered the river. By morning, word spread of their presence, and curious onlookers thronged the riverside in large numbers. Disturbed by the commotion, the elephants wandered within the river, unable to reach the banks, and finally stood still on a sandbar midstream.

To ensure the elephants did not stray towards residential areas, personnel from the forest department, police, and Home Guards kept watch and managed the situation. Eventually, the elephants made their way towards the forest area of Sudepila in Bedhrody, Bajatthur village.
