Terrace gardening training inspires St Agnes College students towards sustainable living

Media Release

Mangaluru, Sep 1: With the goal of encouraging eco-friendly practices and self-sustained urban gardening, the Agnes Towards Community (ATC) organized a session on ‘Sustainable Living – Terrace Gardening Training’ for the III BSc students on August 23, under the guidance of ATC convenor Dr Shailaja H G and staff coordinator Seementhini Fernandes.

K Praveena, senior assistant director, department of horticulture, Mangaluru taluk, delivered an engaging talk that emphasized the importance of growing one’s own food and reducing reliance on commercially grown produce. He illustrated his points with visuals of successful terrace and backyard gardens, making urban gardening seem accessible and practical.

Key highlights of the session included the nutritional and economic benefits of homegrown produce, the dangers of chemical-laden store-bought items, and techniques for setting up gardens in various small spaces using grow bags or shelves. He also shared insights into choosing the right plants for urban environments.

A hands-on demonstration on preparing effective soil mixtures—using sand, soil, compost, and coco-peat—was a major highlight. Students actively participated by handling the mixture and learning about soil texture and composition.

Fida welcomed the gathering, Spandana introduced the guest, and Pranathi delivered the vote of thanks.
