Manchester City agree deal for Donnarumma as Ederson nears exit

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Sep 1: In a major transfer twist just ahead of the summer window deadline, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have agreed on the framework of a deal for Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, according to a report by Sky Sports.

City have reportedly sanctioned the move for the 26-year-old shot-stopper, with long-serving Brazilian keeper Ederson set to depart — potentially to Fenerbahce, though that deal hinges on Donnarumma’s arrival being finalized in time.

Donnarumma's Unexpected PSG Exit

Donnarumma, once considered untouchable at PSG, confirmed his shock departure with an emotional statement:

“Unfortunately someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success. I am disappointed and disheartened.”

The Italian international played a pivotal role in PSG’s historic treble-winning campaign, including Champions League heroics that saw the French club lift the title for the first time in their history.

Ederson’s City Legacy

Ederson, who joined City in 2017 from Benfica for £35 million, leaves behind a glittering legacy. He has won:

• 6 Premier League titles
• 1 UEFA Champions League (2023)
• Numerous domestic trophies

Over 372 appearances, Ederson kept 168 clean sheets, and became renowned not just for his shot-stopping but also his ball-playing ability. He currently holds the Premier League record for most assists by a goalkeeper (7).

Guardiola Acknowledges Uncertainty

Speaking ahead of City’s 1-2 loss to Brighton, manager Pep Guardiola addressed the uncertainty surrounding Ederson’s future:

“For the fact it will be clear, the mood, the vibe for the players and uncertainties for some, it could be better. But on Monday (deadline day), it will happen, or maybe the transfer window in Turkey or Saudi (Arabia) is a little longer.”

Guardiola added that the club continues to treat every player with respect, saying:

“I’m focused on the Manchester City players I have... I cannot ever, ever have a complaint about how the club takes care of them, never ever.”

Extended Deadlines Offer Wiggle Room

While the Premier League transfer window closes Monday, Saudi Arabia’s window remains open until September 10, and Turkey’s until September 11 — giving Ederson extra time to seal a move if needed.

Should the Donnarumma deal be completed, it would mark a significant shift in City’s goalkeeping hierarchy and potentially signal a new era between the posts at the Etihad.
