Brahmavar, Sep 1: A woman and her young child were found hanging at their residence near Kunjalu Heranje Cross under Brahmavar police station limits on August 31.

The deceased have been identified as Sushmita (35) and her daughter Shrestha (1 year and 6 months). The incident reportedly took place when Sushmita’s husband had gone to Bengaluru for court-related work.

Udupi superintendent of police Hariram Shankar, who visited the spot, told reporters: “A woman and her child were found hanging in the afternoon of September 1 in Brahmavar. The deceased have been identified as Sushmita and her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter. Preliminary investigation suggests that the mother took the extreme step after first ending the life of the child. A suicide note has been recovered, in which she has taken full responsibility for the incident. It has also come to light that her husband was convicted by the High Court in a 2009 case under Section 307 (attempt to murder).”

Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
