New Delhi, Sep 3: Senior congress leader and former union minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday cast doubts on the credibility of the Tianjin declaration, which condemned terrorism “in all its forms and manifestations,” pointing out that Pakistan too had signed and adopted the document.
Taking to social media platform X, Chidambaram wrote, “The Tianjin declaration strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It was signed and adopted by Pakistan. That shows the worth of the declaration.”
He further remarked, “Unless countries of the world are able to distinguish between terrorism-exporting nations and terrorism-affected nations, such inane declarations will be signed and adopted.”
The Tianjin declaration was issued at a multilateral forum in China where participating nations reiterated their global commitment to fight terrorism. Chidambaram’s remarks, however, have reignited debate over the effectiveness of such international statements when countries accused of exporting terrorism are among the signatories.
His comments also come at a time when diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan remain high, with New Delhi repeatedly accusing Islamabad of supporting cross-border terrorism.
On Monday, defence and foreign policy experts welcomed the shanghai cooperation organisation’s (SCO) joint statement condemning the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. They praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for firmly articulating India’s stand against cross-border terrorism on the international stage.
The SCO member states strongly denounced the attack, declaring that those responsible for the violence “must be brought to justice,” while extending condolences to the victims’ families.
