Guwahati, Sep 3: In yet another major strike against the drug menace, Assam Police on Wednesday seized heroin worth nearly Rs 8 crore and arrested two peddlers during a special operation carried out by the Special Task Force (STF).

Acting on a tip-off, STF officials intercepted a red Hyundai i10 car at Amingaon, a suburb in North Guwahati. The vehicle, registered in Manipur, was reportedly transporting narcotics from Churachandpur in Manipur to lower Assam.

Upon inspection, police discovered 74 ‘soap boxes’ concealed in the car’s door panels and boot. The boxes contained a consignment of heroin weighing 910 grams, officials confirmed.

Two accused — Gogou Suantak (33) and Seilun Vaiphei (39), both hailing from Churachandpur, Manipur — were taken into custody. They are currently being interrogated to trace the source of the narcotics and identify the wider network involved in the illegal supply chain across the region.

Sharing details of the bust, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted pictures of the seized car and contraband on social media platform X, reaffirming the government’s commitment to intensify the ongoing “Operation Assam Against Drugs.”

Police sources revealed that the crackdown forms part of a larger strategy to curb the inflow of drugs into Assam from neighbouring states, particularly Manipur and Myanmar routes.
