Kundapur, Sept 3: Kundapur police have arrested six individuals, including a woman, in connection with a serious extortion case in which a man was allegedly tied up, assaulted, and forced to transfer money through digital platforms under duress.

According to a complaint lodged by Sandeep Kumar, the victim had come into contact with the main accused, Abdul Savad alias Achchu, around three months ago during a visit to Kundapura. Through Savad, Kumar was introduced to Asma, one of the co-accused, who later invited him to Kundapur on 2 September 2025.

Upon reaching RR Plaza near Malnad Petrol Bunk, Asma allegedly took Kumar to her residence. There, she called in the other accused, and Mohammed Nasir Sharif reportedly threatened him at knifepoint, demanding Rs 3 lac.

When Kumar tried to escape, he was tied up with a nylon rope and physically assaulted. Saipulla, another accused, allegedly struck him with a metal rod on his left shoulder and back. The group then forcibly took Rs 6,200 in cash from his pocket.

The accused further coerced Kumar into transferring money via Google Pay. Under threat, he made three separate transactions — Rs 5,000 initially, followed by Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000 — all sent to Saipulla’s account. They later snatched his ATM card and PIN, withdrew Rs 40,000, and kept both the money and the card. Before releasing him around 11:30 pm, the accused allegedly threatened to kill him if he reported the incident.

Following the directions of Udupi SP Hariram Shankar, and under the supervision of additional SP Sudhakar Naik and DSP H D Kulkarni, a police team led by PSI Nanjanayak (Crime & Security) and PSI Pushpa (Investigation), with support from other staff, tracked down and arrested the accused in Koteshwar village.

The individuals arrested in the case have been identified as Abdul Savad alias Achchu (28), of Badakere, Byndoor taluk; Saipulla (38), of Gulwadi; Mohammed Nasir Sharif (36), of Hanglur; Abdul Sattar (23), of Kumbhashi, Kundapura; Abdul Aziz (26), of Nagodi, Shivamogga district; and Asma (43), a native of Kundapura taluk, currently residing in Gopadi, Kundapura.

The police have also seized two vehicles used in the crime — a car worth approximately Rs 10 lac and another valued at around Rs 8 lac.

All six accused have been produced before the court, and further investigation is underway.
