Mangaluru, Sep 4: The Department of Sociology, St Aloysius (deemed to be University), organised a sociology fest, the fourth edition of ‘Socius 4.0- The great escape: Unveiling timelines and milestones” on September 2 in LCRI hall of the University.
Dr Supriya Hegde Aroor, professor and head of the Department of Psychiatry, Fr Muller College, Mangaluru was the chief guest. Geet Arsh Kaur, a celebrated TedX speaker and the founder of The Skill School, Ahmedabad, Gujarat was the keynote speaker. Dr Praveen Martis SJ, vice chancellor, St Aloysius (deemed to be University) presided over the inaugural ceremony. The ceremony witnessed the gracious presence of Dr Alwyn D’Sa, registrar (Autonomous), Dr Charles Furtado, director, Admin block, and Dr Rose Veera D’Souza, dean, School of Arts and Humanities.






















Dr Supriya Hegde Aroor, in her address, said that individuals must have their own parameters of success. She also emphasized on moving on the journey of life at one's own pace and breaking the stereotypes. "Instead of following the normative timelines of the society, one must choose their journey, their path and their speed. Milestones need not be same for all," she said.
Dr Praveen Martis SJ, vice chancellor, St Aloysius (deemed to be University), in his presidential address, spoke of the importance of EQ compared to IQ and how one must question stereotypes and stigmas. And not just question them but come forward to act on breaking those stigmas, he added.
Geet Arsh Kaur, in her keynote address, shared words and anecdotes from her life and experience. Sharing her personal journey of life she said, "Each of us must realize at some point of life what is our goal and what is our milestone. There is no right or wrong time to take any step in life and most importantly one has to stand up for themselves even when everyone is against." She also said that it is never late to start something new. Further, she said that most importantly "you must start feeling good about yourself and self-love and self-care is an essential aspect that we all must practice, even if it looks selfish sometimes."

Assistant professor and HoD of sociology Dr Joan Rita O’Brien, staff convenor and student coordinators Sannidhi and Yesha were also present. Dr Joan Rita O’Brien, welcomed the gathering and briefed about the programme. Jasmeet Kaur Philomena compered the programme and Savitha D’Souza, assistant professor, Department of Sociology proposed the vote of thanks.
The formal function was then followed by various cultural events and competitions. PU colleges from in and around the city took part in competitions such as collage making, face painting, slam poetry, turncoat and theme dance. The champions trophy was bagged by Alvas College, Moodbidri and Christ The King College, Karkala were the runners up.
Dr Alwyn D’Sa, registrar (Autonomous) was the chief guest for the valedictory programme and presiding was Dr Charles Furtado, director, Admin block. Gracing the occasion were Dr Rose Veera D’Souza, dean, School of Arts and Humanities, Dr Joan Rita O’Brien, HoD of sociology, Savitha D’Souza. Yesha Nair, student convenor delivered the vote of thanks.
