Mangaluru: St Aloysius holds 'Chemergence – 2025' Ignite chemical curiosity fest

Mangaluru, Sep 4: The Department of Chemistry, School of Physical Sciences in association with Dakshina Kannada District PU College Chemistry Lecturers' Association organised "Chemergence 2025” - Ignite chemical curiosity - a pre-university fest showcasing the intriguing realm of Chemistry on September 3 in LCRI hall. The fest not only highlighted the wonders of Chemistry but also underscored the crucial role of basic sciences in shaping modern advancements.

Karthick R, chief manager (innovation), MRPL was the chief guest. Guruprasad M, deputy manager, EHS BASF was the guest of honour, Dr Praveen Martis, SJ, vice chancellor of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) presided over the programme, Dr Alwyn D’Sa registrar of the college, Dr Ronald Nazareth registrar of the university, Dr Asha Abraham, director of LCRI block, Dr Ishwara Bhat S, director of Xavier block, Dr Aruna Kalkur T, dean of Physical Sciences, Dr Vinola Rodrigues, programme coordinator of Chemistry, Dr Racheal Natasha Mary, head of the department of Chemistry and Sneha Saji, convenor of the programme were on the dais. Dr Racheal Natasha Mary welcomed the gathering. The programme was formally inaugurated by lighting of the lamp.

Karthick in his speech, advised the students to explore themselves to become successful in life. He urged the students to do research and help the nation. He also mentioned several uses of composite polymers. Narrating the olden times, he briefed how the emperors used bow and arrow for dominating other emperors. He also spoke about Dr Caroline, who won the Nobel Prize in 2022 for her click chemistry.

Guruprasad in his speech emphasised the importance of taking self-decision in choosing a career and not to be influenced by somebody else. There should be equilibrium in the selection of one’s future.

Dr Praveen Martis in his presidential remarks briefed how he connected into research in Chemistry. He urged the students to understand the basic sciences and focus in research for the cause of nation building. He suggested the students to choose the right path and pursue their area of interest which is close to their heart.

During the programme, several students were felicitated for their outstanding achievements in academics, such as clearing IIT JAM and for awarding national level summer research Fellowships. Sneha Saji proposed the vote of thanks.

Following the inaugural programme, a series of engaging Chemistry events took place throughout the day, including a Chem Forum, Chromo Chemistry, Chemistry Around Me, Capture the Colour, Chem Music, celebrity scientist, panel game, star of Chemergence, Chem play, Cchemagination, Frolic in the war of reactions, spin change and Chemigraphy.

The valedictory programme commenced in Fr LF Rasquinha Hall, LCRI graced by esteemed dignitaries namely chief guest, Pramod Kumar, inspector, Surathkal police station and proud alumnus, Vani Kumari, vice-president, Dakshina Kannada District PU College Chemistry Lecturers' Forum as guest of honour, Dr Ronald Nazareth, registrar of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) as the president, along with the directors of the science blocks, Dr Ishwara Bhat and Dr Asha Abraham, the head of Department of Chemistry Dr Rachael Natasha Mary, programme coordinator of Chemistry Dr Vinola Rodrigues, the convenor of Chemergence, Sneha Saji.

Dr Ashwini welcomed the gathering. Soon after the welcome address Pramod Kumar alumnus of the college was felicitated by Department of Chemistry, for his outstanding contribution to the society which is an inspiration to the future generation. The citation was read by Dr Roshan Fredrick D'Souza.

Pramod Kumar in his speech, inspired the students to lead a disciplined life and to shape their character with strong values. In his address, he also reminisced about his cherished memories of the college, reflecting on the role it played in shaping his own journey and encouraging the students to value their time here as a foundation for their future.

Vani Kumari in her speech emphasised that participation is more important than winning and encouraged students to actively take part in such events. She also highlighted the significance of Chemistry, congratulated the Department of Chemistry for successfully organising the programme, and motivated them to continue hosting such meaningful and inspiring events in the future.

Dr Ronald Nazareth, in his presidential address, congratulated all the participating students for being a part of Chemergence which gave them a platform to explore, learn and ignite the curiosity in them. He also focused on students having a goal in future which will definitely help them achieve success.

Divya Deepthi Montero proposed the vote of thanks. This was followed by the prize distribution ceremony.

Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar emerged as the overall champion, while Expert PU College, Valachil secured the runner-up position. The Chemistry fest saw participation from 27 colleges with around 450 students. The event proved to be an enriching experience, marked by extensive learning, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing throughout the day.
