Mumbai, Sep 8: Acclaimed filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan was detained at Mumbai airport on Sunday following a lookout notice issued by Kerala police in connection with a case registered earlier this year by Elamakkara police.

The case, based on a complaint from a prominent Malayalam actress, was filed in January for alleged harassment via social media. Kochi city police commissioner Putta Vimaladitya confirmed the detention, stating: ‘The detention was carried out under the lookout notice, and Sanal will be taken to Kochi for questioning.’

Sanal, known for his unconventional storytelling, confirmed the news on social media, questioning the basis of the charges. “I don’t know on what basis a stalking case has been filed against me. As per the legal section, if someone follows a woman due to concern for her safety, it cannot be considered stalking,” he wrote.

He alleged procedural lapses by the police, claiming that the original complaint was mishandled and his intentions misrepresented. Sanal said he possesses an audio recording in which the actress reportedly conveyed concerns for her safety and that of her daughter, evidence which he says was never examined.

The director also questioned the police action in Mumbai, alleging that officers booked flights specifically to intercept him. Kochi police have confirmed that he will now face questioning in custody, with further legal proceedings to follow.
