Mumbai, Sept 10: A 52-year-old police head constable lost his life, while a woman constable sustained serious injuries, after a speeding car knocked them down near Worli, at the connector between the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and the Mumbai Coastal Road, on Tuesday morning.

According to officials, the constables were deployed as part of security arrangements for the high-profile visit of the Mauritian Prime Minister and the Israeli Finance Minister. The mishap occurred around 7:50 am when the personnel were manning the route.

The victims were identified as Head Constable Dattatray Kumbhar (52) and Constable Riddhi Patil, both attached to Worli police station. Police said the duo attempted to cross the road but miscalculated the speed of an approaching car. “Before they could react, the vehicle came dangerously close and rammed into them,” an officer explained.

Both were immediately rushed in a police van to Wockhardt Hospital. Kumbhar, who suffered critical head injuries, was declared dead on arrival. Patil sustained a leg fracture but is reported to be in a stable condition.

Kumbhar, attached to the Anti-Terrorism Cell (ATC) of Worli police, hailed from Satara and resided with his family at the Kalachowki police colony. He is survived by his wife, a married daughter, and a son who recently completed his studies.

Police have booked the driver, identified as Ramchandra Rane (46), a criminal lawyer, under Section 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Rane was reportedly travelling from his residence in Malad to his Fort office in a Hyundai Grand at the time of the incident.
