Udupi, Sep 12: A tragic incident occurred off the Malpe lighthouse on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, when a fishing boat capsized due to rough waves, leading to the death of local fisherman Rama Kharvi, a resident of Sastana Koditale.

According to sources, Kharvi, who owned the ill-fated boat, had been venturing out alone for fishing from Malpe harbor for the past 25 to 30 years. As usual, he set out to sea on Wednesday morning. However, when he failed to return home by afternoon, his son tried contacting him. With no response, the family, along with relatives and friends, launched a search late into the night but were unable to trace him.

On Thursday, September 11, his body was found near the Malpe lighthouse. It is suspected that his boat overturned in the strong currents, and as he was unable to swim to safety, he drowned. The boat, engine, nets, and other equipment were completely damaged, resulting in heavy losses.
