Ajman, Feb 8: “Participation in sports predisposes to injuries. In many cases, these types of injuries are often due to overuse or acute trauma of a part of the body when participating in a certain activity”, says Prof Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Professor and Dean, Faculty of Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, India, Secretary General, Asian Federation of Sports Medicine.
Prof Sandhu will be delivering lectures at the National Conference on Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, to be held on the 17th of February 2012 at Gulf Medical University in Ajman. The conference is being organized by the College of Allied Health Sciences, Gulf Medical University, Ajman.
Explaining further Prof Sandhu said the sports injuries can be broadly classified as either traumatic or overuse injuries. Traumatic injuries account for most injuries in contact sports such as football because of the dynamic and high collision nature of these sports. These injuries range from bruises and muscle strains, to fractures and head injuries. The body’s response to these sports injuries is the same in the initial five days period immediately following the traumatic incident-inflammation. Sports Medicine consultant and physiotherapist’s main aim is injury prevention and rehabilitation.
Dr Swetha Shenoy, Reader, Department of Sports Medicine and Physiotheraphy, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, India will speak on basic findings, principles and simple strategies for interventions using EMG as a tool for evaluating and treating muscle dysfunction of low back pain. Dr Shweta Shenoy mentions that EMG bio-feedback may be a valuable tool to teach players to activate muscles correctly.
Major Abduladheem Kamkar, Head of Physiotherapy Section, Department of Medical Services, Dubai Police Chairman, Emirates Physiotherapy Society will deliver a lecture on Rehabilitation of Sports Injuries provide an overview about role of physiotherapy in management of sport injuries. “Successful implementation of the rehabilitation plan should result in return to sport to a level as close to pre-injury as possible. This is usually the utmost important goal for the athlete” mentioned Major Kamkar.
Dr Harold Vanderschmid, Specialist Orthopedic Surgeon, American Hospital, Dubai, UAE will deliver a lecture on Surgical Intervention in Sports Injuries. He said that surgical treatment for sports injuries is sometimes necessary following a traumatic injury such as a fracture or ligament injury or when other conservative treatments are ineffective. Surgical treatments can be performed either through arthroscopic surgery or open surgery. The latest mainly minimal invasive procedures for common injuries of the shoulder, knee and ankle will be presented. “Minimal invasive reconstruction techniques can deliver good anatomical restoration, good aesthetic results and allow earlier return to sports. Special rehabilitation protocols play an important role in the treatment of acute sports injuries” explains Dr Vanderschmid.
Dr William Murrell, Consultant Orthopaedic Sports, Dubai Bone and Joint Center, UAE will be talking on Arthroscopy and Sports. He will focus on the advances in arthroscopy that have changed the face of sport, and the burgeoning technologies that will take us into the 22nd century and beyond.
Prof Kisan Patond, Professor and Head Department of Orthopedics, GMC Hospital Ajman will deliver a lecture on Medical management of sports injuries. He says that the medical management of sports injuries ranges from initial phase application of PRICE, and TOTAPS regimes to different medications to minimize the effects of injuries.
Over 150 professionals, physiotherapists, orthopedic surgeons and officials and members of various sports federations and clubs are expected to attend the conference.
The conference is accredited by the Ministry of Health, UAE for 6 CME hours.
