Mangaluru, Sept 16: A man lost Rs 6.4 lac in an online part-time job scam, as reported in a complaint filed at the Barke police station.

According to the complaint, the victim came across a Telegram page on August 24 that advertised part-time job opportunities. Trusting the offer and the promise of earning commissions, he clicked on a link and joined a Telegram group.

Following instructions provided by a woman identified as Pratima, the victim initially transferred Rs 1 lac via RTGS to a bank account on August 28.

Subsequently, in a phased manner, he transferred an additional Rs 2 lac and Rs 3.4 lac to various other bank accounts — totalling Rs 6.4 lac.

The scammers then assured him that the money would be refunded and told him not to panic. They claimed that if he transferred more money, the full amount paid so far would be returned.

However, when the victim demanded his money back on September 11, the accused failed to return the amount and allegedly absconded. Realising he had been cheated, the victim lodged a formal complaint.

Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
