Mumbai, Sep 27: As the vibrant Durga Puja season sweeps through Mumbai, Bollywood icons Rani Mukerji and Kajol added a touch of tradition and elegance to the festivities, joining family and friends at their annual puja pandal on Saturday. Dressed in their festive best, the cousins paid homage to both the goddess and a beloved family member who once led these celebrations.

Kajol radiated grace in a cream silk saree paired with a striking red blouse, while Rani Mukerji looked ethereal in a white sari adorned with a delicate floral border. The two stars were joined by filmmaker Ayan Mukerji, who kept it classic in a white kurta-pajama, and Kajol's sister, Tanishaa Mukerji, who opted for a refreshing lemon-yellow saree.

This year’s Durga Puja holds deeper emotional meaning for the Mukerji family following the passing of their uncle, veteran actor and filmmaker Deb Mukherjee, who died in March at the age of 83. Deb Mukherjee was the driving force behind the family's Durga Puja celebrations for decades, and his absence was felt deeply during this year's festivities.

In an exclusive conversation, Tanishaa Mukerji shared that while the family is enveloped in sadness due to recent losses—including three deaths in the family this year—they are also committed to carrying forward Deb Mukherjee’s legacy with strength and pride.

“There’s a little sadness and a little excitement this year. Our Debu Kaka, who organized the Durga Puja every year, is no longer with us. It's difficult, but we’re honouring his dream,” Tanishaa said.

She revealed that her late uncle always envisioned the Puja becoming more grand each year, with a strong emphasis on community service. In line with his wishes, the family is planning broader outreach this year, including distributing food to a larger number of people and amplifying the celebration through social media initiatives.

“This year, we’re making sure his dream lives on. He always said more people should be fed during Puja. That’s exactly what we’re trying to do,” she added.

Even amid the glamour and star presence, the mood was one of reverence and remembrance. As the Mukerji family continues its cherished Durga Puja tradition, they do so not only in celebration but also in tribute to the man who helped build it into what it is today.
