West Ham fight back to draw 1-1 at Everton in Nuno Espirito Santo’s debut

London, Sep 30: Nuno Espirito Santo’s tenure as West Ham United coach began on a resilient note as his side came from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw at Everton in the Premier League on Monday.

The Portuguese manager, who replaced Graham Potter on Saturday, witnessed his team’s defensive vulnerabilities early on as James Garner’s cross found Michael Keane, who headed Everton ahead in the 18th minute. The goal marked Everton’s 361st in Premier League history, the highest alongside Manchester United.

Everton, unbeaten at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium, could not extend their lead, while West Ham grew into the match during a pulsating second half. Captain Jarrod Bowen scored the equalizer 20 minutes into the second period with a clinical left-foot strike—the first goal Everton has conceded at their new ground.

“I just tried to get into the box and I know what I am going to do before the defenders do,” Bowen said. “It is a big point for us. It is a fair result. It shows the character of the team going down 1-0. We knew we would get our own chances.”

The draw leaves West Ham second from bottom with four points from six games, while Everton sits ninth with eight points. “Disappointed we didn't take all three points,” Everton coach David Moyes admitted. “It was a home game and an opportunity for us. We had moments we should have pushed the button a bit more to get the second goal.”
