Shubman Gill appointed India’s new ODI captain ahead of Australia tour

Daijiworld Media Network - Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, Oct 4: Shubman Gill has been named India’s new ODI captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma for the upcoming three-match series in Australia starting October 19. Rohit remains in the squad as a batter alongside Virat Kohli, marking their return to the ODI fold since India’s successful 2025 Champions Trophy campaign.

Gill’s elevation to ODI captaincy follows his earlier appointment as India’s Test captain this year, making him the leader across both formats and the vice-captain in T20Is. This leadership transition comes on the heels of India’s resounding innings-and-140-run win over West Indies in Gill’s first Test captaincy on home soil.

Shreyas Iyer will serve as vice-captain in the ODI squad. Key players Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant are absent as they continue to recover from injuries—a quad strain and fractured right foot, respectively. Their absence paves the way for newcomers Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel, while Yashasvi Jaiswal also earns a spot. Notably, Ravindra Jadeja misses out, and Jasprit Bumrah is rested from the ODI matches.

The bowling lineup in ODIs will feature Axar Patel alongside Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Prasidh Krishna. Jasprit Bumrah will return for the five-match T20I series, joined by the core Asia Cup-winning squad. Washington Sundar, previously a standby for the Asia Cup, has now secured a place in the main T20I team.

Though Rohit and Kohli have not played competitive cricket since IPL 2025, both have been rigorously preparing for the demanding white-ball schedule ahead. Rohit has been training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, while Kohli has focused on preparation in London.

India’s white-ball tour of Australia kicks off with the ODI series opener at Perth Stadium on October 19, followed by matches at Adelaide Oval (October 23) and Sydney Cricket Ground (October 25). The tour then transitions into a five-match T20I series starting October 29 at Manuka Oval, Canberra, with subsequent games at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Bellerive Oval (Hobart), Gold Coast Stadium, and The Gabba in Brisbane, concluding November 8.

During India’s last bilateral ODI series in Australia (2020/21), India lost 2-1 but bounced back to win the T20I series 2-1 on the same tour.
