Mangaluru, Oct 4: In a shocking case of online fraud, a Mangaluru resident lost Rs 42.50 lac after falling prey to a fake investment scheme sent via a WhatsApp link from an unknown number. A case has been registered at the CEN Police Station.

According to the complaint, the victim received a message on July 13 from a person identifying herself as Priya Agarwal, sharing a link that promised lucrative investment opportunities. When the victim clicked the link, he was later sent another link instructing him to register on an app and upload personal details.

Believing the scheme to be genuine, the victim followed the instructions and was lured with promises of higher profits. From July 24 to September 19, he transferred Rs 42.50 lac in multiple transactions from his various bank accounts.

The fraud came to light on September 20 when the fraudsters sent yet another link, demanding Rs 12 lac as tax payment to continue his investments. Sensing something amiss, the victim questioned the demand and soon realised he had been cheated.

The victim approached the CEN Police Station, alleging that he was duped under the pretext of an investment plan, and has sought legal action against the culprits. Police have launched an investigation into the cyber fraud.
