Six illegal scrapyards sealed in Canacona after theft complaints

Canacona, Oct 7: In a major crackdown on illegal activities, the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) on Friday sealed six unauthorised scrapyards operating in various parts of the town following a surge in theft and robbery complaints linked to such establishments.

The action came in response to a complaint filed in April by CMC councillor Shubham Komarpant, who had warned that the growing scrapyard mafia was endangering public safety, ruining the scenic beauty of Canacona, and causing inconvenience to tourists visiting the beaches.

Komarpant said that showcause notices had earlier been served to all six scrapyards before the CMC took action to seal them. He claimed that the rapid spread of scrapyards in residential zones had coincided with a spike in criminal incidents in the taluka.

“I will now take up the issue of illegal scrapyards in the village panchayat areas of Canacona taluka. If the panchayats fail to act, I will not hesitate to move the court for justice,” Komarpant said. “These scrapyards must stop operating in residential areas and shift to the Shristhal Industrial Area if they wish to continue their business.”

Residents have welcomed the move, saying it will help restore safety and cleanliness in the town while protecting its appeal as a popular tourist destination.
