Rome, Oct 13: Konkani Kutam Rome, the vibrant Konkani Catholic community based in the Eternal City, gathered at St Benedict Church, Ostiense, to celebrate Monthi Fest – the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary – on Sunday, October 12.
Around 50 Konkani-speaking priests, religious and lay faithful, originally from the west coast of India, including Mangaluru, Udupi, Karwar, and Goa, came together in a spirit of unity and devotion to observe this cherished tradition.
The eucharistic celebration in Konkani was presided over by Fr Richard Quadros and concelebrated by several priests who are currently pursuing higher studies or serving in various religious capacities across Rome. In a symbolic gesture of devotion, each participant offered a rose to Mother Mary, expressing heartfelt love and reverence.

The soulful choir, led by Fr Ashwin Rebello, brought alive the traditional Monthi Fest hymns, evoking fond memories of the nine-day novena observed back home in Mangaluru.
Following the Mass, a fellowship gathering was held in the church hall. Newly arrived members to Rome were warmly welcomed into the community. Fr Rockwin Pinto blessed the ‘Novem’ (newly harvested grain), which was then distributed to all attendees.
The event was graced by Fr Vivian Furtado, SVD, provincial superior of Italy and Albania; Dr Sunil Ranjar, secretary of the Pontifical Biblical Institute; Fr Ambrose D’Souza and committee members Sr Gretta Fernandes, Josline Lobo, Fr Royson Fernandes, and Fr Jovin Sequeira.
Fr Anthony D’Souza, SJ, president (Gurkar) of Konkani Kutam Rome, delivered the welcome address. The vote of thanks was proposed by Fr Vikas Mathias, secretary of the association. Sr Shanthi D’Souza compered the programme.
The celebration concluded with a traditional Mangalurean meal featuring culinary delights from the western coast of India, enjoyed and appreciated by all present.
