Edmonton, Oct 16: Rookies Matt Savoie and Ike Howard are soaking in invaluable lessons from Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl as they begin their NHL careers with the Edmonton Oilers. Despite a tough 4-3 loss to the Calgary Flames in the season opener, Savoie described the experience of training and playing alongside two of hockey’s elite as both thrilling and educational.
“It just makes you want to push yourself to get better, I think, seeing the level they’re at, the way they train and handle themselves every single day,” Savoie told the NHL @TheRink podcast. Howard echoed the sentiment, highlighting the privilege of observing their preparation and day-to-day routines.

While neither rookie has scored in the current 2025-26 season—Savoie has one career assist from last season and Howard is yet to record a point—the exposure to elite talent is helping them understand the habits, mindset, and professionalism required at the top level.
For both players, every practice, game, and locker room interaction with McDavid and Draisaitl offers a chance to absorb lessons that could shape their careers. As they adapt to the NHL’s pace and intensity, the guidance of two of the league’s brightest stars provides both inspiration and a roadmap for future success.
