Greater Manchester, Oct 16: Former boxing world champion Ricky Hatton, 46, was found hanged at his home in Greater Manchester, a coroner’s court heard on Thursday as an inquest into his death was opened and adjourned.

Hatton, nicknamed the “Hitman,” was discovered unresponsive on September 14 by his manager Paul Speak, who had arrived to take him to Manchester Airport for a flight to Dubai, police coroner’s officer Alison Catlow told the court. Hatton was last seen by family on September 12 and appeared “well,” but missed an event the following day.

Coroner Alison Mutch confirmed the provisional cause of death as hanging, with the inquest adjourned to March 20, 2026.

The retired fighter, a former light-welterweight and welterweight world champion, was widely loved for his charisma and larger-than-life personality. His funeral drew thousands of mourners in Manchester, including celebrities Liam Gallagher, Wayne Rooney, and Tyson Fury.

Hatton had been open about his mental health struggles, discussing battles with alcohol, drugs, and multiple suicide attempts in a 2016 BBC interview. Despite retiring after a brief comeback in 2012, he returned for a 2022 exhibition against Marco Antonio Barrera and had planned a professional fight in Dubai this December.
