Mumbai, Oct 26: The central government is reviewing a Rs 23,487-crore proposal for Mumbai Metro’s Line 11, an entirely underground corridor stretching 17.4 km from Anik Depot in Sion to the Gateway of India. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) has finalized the route and submitted the project for formal approval, seeking funding assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Key Highlights of Line 11:
• Route: Anik Depot (Sion) → Wadala → Byculla → Nagpada → Bhendi Bazaar → Crawford Market → Horniman Circle → Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) → Gateway of India.
• Length & Alignment: 17.4 km, almost entirely underground.

• Stations: 14 stations, including 13 underground stations and one at-grade terminal at Anik Depot.
• Integrated Depot: A vertically stacked facility at Anik Depot, combining metro and BEST bus operations to optimize land use.
The project will be executed by MMRCL, with preparatory works running in parallel with JICA loan negotiations. Major construction is expected to commence by late 2026 or early 2027, once all necessary clearances are obtained.
This ambitious line aims to improve connectivity across South Mumbai, linking key commercial and historic areas while reducing surface congestion in the city.
