Mumbai, Oct 26: The Indian film and television fraternity on Sunday gathered at veteran actor Satish Shah’s residence in Mumbai to pay their final respects to the legendary performer, who passed away a day earlier at the age of 74 due to kidney-related complications.

Shah, fondly remembered for his iconic comic timing and memorable performances in shows like Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, breathed his last on Saturday afternoon.

Several prominent names from the entertainment industry, including Ratna Pathak Shah, Rajesh Kumar, Roopa Ganguly, Dilip Joshi, Johny Lever, Sumeet Raghvan, Deven Bhojani, Jamnadas Majethia, Aanjjan Srivastav, Ashoke Pandit, Jackie Shroff, and Kunal Kohli, were seen arriving at his Mumbai residence to offer condolences to the bereaved family.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray also paid his respects during the antim darshan, reflecting the deep impact Shah had beyond the film fraternity.

Confirming the news, filmmaker Ashoke Pandit told NDTV, “With a heavy heart, I must say that our dear friend and a very fine actor, Satish Shah, passed away around 2:30 pm due to kidney failure. Despite immediate medical attention, he could not be revived. His demise is a huge loss to the industry.”

Shah is survived by his wife, designer Madhu Shah.

A versatile actor who appeared in over 250 films, Satish Shah made his debut in Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan (1978) and rose to prominence with his unforgettable portrayal of Municipal Commissioner D’Mello in the 1983 cult classic Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.

He went on to deliver several notable performances in films such as Hum Saath Saath Hain, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, and Om Shanti Om.

On television, his breakthrough came with Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984), where he played a new character in each of the show’s 55 episodes — a feat that remains unmatched. His role as the witty Indravadhan Sarabhai in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai further cemented his status as one of Indian television’s finest comic actors.

Apart from acting, Shah also made his mark as a judge on popular comedy shows such as Comedy Circus, mentoring young talent and shaping India’s television comedy landscape.
His last on-screen appearance was in Sajid Khan’s Humshakals (2014).

The entertainment industry mourns the loss of a true legend whose humour, warmth, and unmatched acting prowess brought joy to millions across generations.
