Buenos Aires, Oct 28: In what could be a major boost for football fans worldwide, Argentine legend Lionel Messi has hinted at his desire to play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In an interview with NBC News, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner said he would “like to be there” when Argentina defend their title, but stressed that his participation will depend on his fitness level.

“Well, the truth is that yes, it’s something extraordinary to be able to be in a World Cup, and I would like to be there — to feel well and to be an important part of helping my national team, if I am there,” Messi said.
However, the 37-year-old added that he will decide only after evaluating his physical condition ahead of next year’s pre-season with Inter Miami. “I am going to assess that on a day-to-day basis when I start preseason next year with Inter and see if I can really be 100%,” he stated.
Messi, who joined Inter Miami after leaving Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, has been in fine form, scoring 73 goals and providing 37 assists in 83 matches for the Major League Soccer (MLS) club.
The Argentine captain, who currently has 195 international caps, could reach the 200-match milestone if he features in the 2026 World Cup. “We’re coming off winning the last World Cup, and being able to defend it on the field again is spectacular because it’s always a dream to play with the national team, especially in official competitions,” he added.
While Messi has not confirmed his participation yet, fans and football pundits alike hope to see the legendary forward lead La Albiceleste once again on the world’s biggest stage.
