Fake scientist nabbed at BARC: Mumbai police seize suspected nuclear data, probe foreign links

Mumbai, Oct 30: In a startling revelation following the arrest of a man posing as a scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai Police have recovered what they described as “suspicious nuclear data” and over a dozen maps from the accused. The seized materials are now under forensic and intelligence examination to determine if they contain sensitive or classified nuclear information.

The accused, identified as Akhtar Qutubuddin Hussaini, was arrested in Versova last week after he was found impersonating a BARC scientist under multiple fake identities. Police recovered forged BARC ID cards, passports, Aadhaar and PAN cards, with names such as Ali Raza Hussain and Alexander Palmer.

Sources revealed that Hussaini had made several international calls in recent months, prompting investigators to trace his call records to identify possible foreign connections linked to the suspected data.

Initial findings show that Hussaini has a long history of identity fraud and deception. In 2004, he was deported from Dubai after claiming to possess “classified documents” related to scientific research. Despite the deportation, he managed to re-enter Dubai and travel to Tehran and other countries using fake passports.

Further investigation revealed that Munazzil Khan, a resident of Jharkhand, had allegedly forged passports for Hussaini’s brother. The addresses used in the documents were traced to a house in Jamshedpur sold nearly 30 years ago after their father’s death. The passports bore the names Hussaini Mohammad Adil and Nasimuddin Syed Adil Hussaini.

Police now suspect both brothers—Akhtar and Adil—used fake identities to travel abroad.

Sources confirmed that Delhi Police recently arrested Adil Hussaini, who is believed to have introduced his brother to the Jharkhand forger, Munazzil Khan. During interrogation, Akhtar misled Mumbai Police by claiming that his brother was “long dead.”

The probe has also expanded to include Munazzil’s brother, Ilyas Khan, who has now been declared wanted. He allegedly provided Akhtar with forged educational certificates, including fake school and college degrees.

Authorities are working closely with central intelligence agencies to determine whether the recovered nuclear-related documents pose any national security risks.
