Yami Gautam recalls seeking Gen Z help to prepare for ‘Bala’ role

Mumbai, Nov 8: Actress Yami Gautam, who is earning praise for her performance in Haq, revealed that she once turned to a Gen Z youngster for help while preparing for her role in Bala.

Speaking to IANS during the film’s promotions in Mumbai, Yami shared how she had to quickly adapt to a world she knew little about when playing a TikTok creator in the 2019 hit.

“In Bala, I played a TikToker — and I had absolutely no idea what TikTok was. I didn’t even have an account! So, a day before filming, I asked a Gen Z person to help me understand that world,” she recalled with a laugh.

Reflecting on Shah Rukh Khan’s famous remark that “to get it right is boring,” Yami said she believes acting methods depend entirely on the film and the character. “Sometimes you play someone who’s just naturally walking around, and other times, the character is far from your own reality,” she said.

The actress explained that she focuses deeply on detail and authenticity in every role. “My homework has to be specific — even if a word is mispronounced, the sound of that mispronunciation must still feel correct. It’s all about nuance and balance,” she added, citing her work in Article 370 as another example of subtle, restrained performance.

“When I say ‘uninhibited’, I mean performing freely — without holding back or becoming self-conscious. You have to surrender to the process, surrender to the role,” Yami concluded.
