New Delhi, Dec 17: The Indian National Congress on Wednesday announced nationwide protests against the Centre’s decision to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) with a new scheme, directing its state units to hold demonstrations at district headquarters across the country. The move, coming amid strong opposition criticism, is expected to escalate political tensions in the winter session of Parliament.
The protests follow the introduction of the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Aajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha, aimed at restructuring the existing rural employment guarantee scheme — a flagship welfare measure for millions of rural households. Opposition leaders argue that removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name and shifting to a new model undermines workers’ rights and the legacy of the original act.

The political developments come as much of North India reels under adverse winter weather, with the India Meteorological Department issuing dense fog and cold wave warnings, affecting visibility, road travel and daily life in several states.
Meanwhile, air pollution levels soared to hazardous categories in areas like Rohtak in Haryana, prompting heightened health concerns. Authorities are urging residents to take precautions as thick smog complicates travel and routine activities.
