St Agnes College celebrates Annual Sports Day with grandeur and sporting spirit

Mangaluru, Dec 19: The Annual Sports Day of St Agnes college was celebrated on December 18 with great enthusiasm and vibrant participation at the NRSC ground. The programme aimed at promoting physical fitness, team spirit, and sportsmanship among students.

The event commenced with a march-past by students of all classes. Each class, led by its captain, marched in disciplined formation, displaying unity and coordination. This year the international theme of Sports Day was adopted by the college and every team displayed one aspect of the theme “Levelling the playing field: Sports for social inclusion”, while aligning with the UN sustainable Development Goals. The march past was followed by the hoisting of the college flag.

The inaugural function began with a welcome address by Sr Dr Venissa AC, the principal of the college, who highlighted the importance of sports in holistic education. This was followed by the inaugural address by the chief guest, Shalet Pinto, chairperson, ecotourism, Government of Karnataka, who emphasized the role of sports in building character and resilience She illustrated the fact with examples of sportswomen who have triumphed over adverse circumstances to achieve glory. An oath was administered to the athletes, by Anvith Shetty, sports secretary (PG) reaffirming their commitment to fair play and sportsmanship. The sports lamp was lit by Sunil Devadiga, sports secretary, (UG) after it was relayed by the national and international level players of the college. The Chief Guest then declared the Sports Day open

After the inaugural ceremony, various sports events were conducted throughout the day. These included track events such as 100 m, 200 m, and relay races, as well as field events like long jump, shot put, and discus throw. Students participated actively and showcased remarkable skill, energy, and competitive spirit.

The programme concluded with the valedictory function, where Gremsy Sequeira was the chief guest. Sequeira is programme manager at Gameskraft, Trainer at EXPA National Cadet Corps and youth secretary, Kanara Cultural Association and an alumna of St Agnes College. In her address, she reminisced about her own wonderful experiences at the college and reiterated that St Agnes College has always been devoted to holistic development. She predicted that the day’s exciting happenings would remain with the students and go a long way in influencing their lives and careers. Prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners of the events of Sports Day as well as to the teams that won various games in the run-up to the Sports Day.

The Individual championships were won by Alric of II BCom (UG Boys), Anvith Shetty, IIMBA (PG Boys), Prapthi, I BCom (UG Girls) and Bhoomika, IMBA (PG Girls). The prizes for the best marching team went to I BCom (ACCA Batch), IIBCA “B” Batch and IIIBBA. The overall championship trophy was awarded to III BCA among the undergraduate classes and II MCA among the postgraduate classes for their outstanding performances. In her vote of thanks, the physical director, Dr Tangarani, appreciated the efforts of the organizing committee, staff, and volunteers for the smooth conduct of the Sports Day and congratulated all participants.

The Annual Sports Day served as a memorable occasion that fostered camaraderie, discipline, and a spirit of healthy competition among the students.
