Raipur, Dec 21: Chhattisgarh has emerged as a frontrunner in the national fight against sickle cell disease, having screened around 1.65 crore people under the Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the goal of eradicating the disease by 2047.
According to official sources, the state government has so far identified more than 3.35 lakh carriers of the disease and diagnosed 27,135 patients, all of whom are receiving free treatment through government healthcare facilities.

The initiative has significantly strengthened health management systems in the state, with a marked increase in the use of hydroxyurea in government hospitals to ensure uninterrupted and effective treatment for patients.
Jashpur district has achieved a major milestone by completing 100 per cent screening of its target population, setting an example for other districts to follow.
In a further boost to advanced care, plans are underway to develop a Sickle Cell Centre of Competence at AIIMS Raipur, which is expected to provide specialised and comprehensive medical services in the future.
Officials said the sustained and coordinated efforts reflect Chhattisgarh’s strong commitment to public health and mark a decisive step towards building a healthier India.
