Massachusetts, Dec 23: As families across Massachusetts prepare for holiday celebrations, flu activity has risen sharply, prompting concerns about the spread of the virus among loved ones. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has reported "high" flu activity for the first time this season.
The increase in cases is adding stress to families already juggling shopping, gift wrapping, and holiday cooking, as they try to protect vulnerable members such as grandparents and young children.

“It’s hard because he’s been in school. I’m afraid of getting everyone in the family sick,” said a mother in Foxboro, emphasizing the challenge of keeping the household safe.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been 4.6 million flu cases across the U.S. since the start of the season, with 1,900 deaths reported. The highly contagious strain causes fever, body aches, cough, fatigue, and vomiting, forcing some families to change holiday travel plans at the last minute.
“We were supposed to fly out tomorrow. Unfortunately, he woke up with a fever,” said a mother from Walpole, who confirmed her child tested positive for influenza A after a trip to CVS for testing.
Health experts urge precautionary measures, especially in crowded spaces. “Even if you’re well, wearing a mask on planes, trains, or in crowded areas can help minimize your risk,” said Dr. Vandana Madhavan, Clinical Director of Pediatric Infectious Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital.
With nearly two weeks until schools reopen, families are working to limit the spread at home while salvaging some holiday fun. Frequent hand washing and mask use remain key strategies.
While it may be too late for a flu shot to protect against Christmas gatherings, doctors recommend getting vaccinated now for protection during later winter months, including February vacations.
