Pipeline fault hits Porvorim water supply

Daijiworld Media Network - Porvorim

Porvorim, Dec 28: The Public Works Department (PWD) on Saturday announced that Porvorim will receive restricted water supply on Sunday following a breakdown of the Water Resources Department’s 1,200-mm major pipeline at Duler in Mapusa.

The damaged pipeline supplies raw water to the 15 MLD Porvorim water treatment plant. Sources said the pipeline developed a fault on Friday evening, resulting in the wastage of a large quantity of water. Water supply was immediately halted to facilitate repair work.

PWD officials said the repair work was completed on Saturday and raw water supply to the treatment plant is expected to resume on Sunday. However, they clarified that it would take some time for the raw water to be treated at the Porvorim plant before regular supply to consumers is fully restored.

Residents of Porvorim, who generally receive water during the evening hours, said supply was cut off from Friday itself. Several water tankers were seen supplying water to residential localities to meet emergency requirements.

The disruption has come at a difficult time, as Porvorim is witnessing peak tourist activity. The urbanised area has a high concentration of residential complexes as well as commercial establishments, including hotels, making the water shortage a major concern for residents and businesses alike.
