Panaji, Dec 28: A major fire broke out on Saturday noon at a decor unit in Kirbhat-Nuvem, engulfing scrap material stacked in an open area. Thick black smoke from the site was visible from a distance, highlighting the intensity of the blaze.
A team from the South Goa Collectorate rushed to the spot to assess whether fire safety precautions were in place at the unit.

Congress leader Everson Vales said the incident, which reduced scrap waste including thermocol and paper to ashes, serves as a warning for authorities to check fire safety compliance. “Imagine if the fire had spread to the production unit. We have asked the district authorities to investigate the fire safety measures adopted by the unit,” he said.
A company representative said the scrap material suddenly caught fire around noon. “Our workers tried to extinguish it, but it became uncontrollable, and we called the fire brigade,” he added.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown. Authorities have confirmed that suitable action will be initiated after a detailed assessment.
