Abu Dhabi, Dec 30: The Konkani Cultural Organisation (KCO) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Benette D’Mello, a long-time member whose contribution to the organisation spanned nearly three decades. His demise has left the KCO fraternity in mourning, with members remembering him as a dedicated organiser, gifted entertainer and a unifying presence in the community.
Benette D’Mello joined KCO in 1995 and went on to serve the organisation with unwavering commitment, most notably as entertainment secretary for several years. He played a key role in the success of numerous KCO programmes, working behind the scenes to select songs, coordinate with artistes and manage entertainment segments with precision. The energy and rhythm that came to define KCO events were largely shaped by his sustained efforts.

He served as president of KCO during 2012 and 2013, a period marked by initiatives that had a lasting impact on both the organisation and the wider community. Among his notable contributions was his instrumental role in organising the charity theatre production Ami Nathelle Velyar, the proceeds of which supported the construction of St Therese Church in Abu Dhabi and St Paul’s Church in Musaffah. The initiative reflected his belief in using culture and creativity for larger social and spiritual causes.
D’Mello was actively involved in all aspects of KCO activities, including sports events, annual picnics, and cultural and entertainment programmes. A strong believer in participation and togetherness, he ensured that every event reflected the warmth and collective spirit of the KCO family.
Known for his humour and lively personality, he was also admired for his sense of aesthetics, particularly in decoration and presentation. At KCO family gatherings, he was often the centre of cheer, bringing laughter and enthusiasm that made each occasion memorable.
During the organisation’s Pearl Jubilee celebrations this year, D’Mello played a key role in conceptualising and shaping the entertainment programmes held in Abu Dhabi and Mangaluru. Although illness prevented his active participation, his influence was evident in the successful execution of the celebrations.
Members of the organisation remember Benette D’Mello not only for his contributions, but also for the generosity, warmth and sincerity with which he served. The KCO community has said that his presence will continue to be felt in its gatherings and ongoing journey.
As the organisation mourns his passing, it also honours a life defined by service, commitment and joy. Benette D’Mello’s legacy, members say, will continue to inspire the Konkani Cultural Organisation for generations to come.
