Mumbai, Jan 28: In a development that has left music lovers stunned, superstar singer Arijit Singh has announced his retirement from playback singing, stating that he will not take up any new assignments in the industry.
The much-loved vocalist made the announcement through a social media note, expressing gratitude to his listeners for their constant love and support over the years.

“Hello, Happy new year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much of love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey,” Arijit wrote.
He also thanked fans for standing by him throughout his career, calling his playback journey a “wonderful” one.
Over the past decade, Arijit Singh has emerged as one of the most influential voices in contemporary Hindi cinema. He made his Bollywood playback debut with Raabta from Agent Vinod (2012), composed by Pritam. However, it was Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2 (2013) that catapulted him to nationwide fame and established him as the defining voice of romance in Bollywood.
Arijit’s discography includes several chart-topping hits such as Channa Mereya, Agar Tum Saath Ho, Gerua, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Kesariya, Phir Le Aaya Dil, Khairiyat and Shayad, among many others.
Arijit had earlier made headlines following a reported fallout with Bollywood actor Salman Khan, after which he did not sing for Salman’s films for several years. The issue was later resolved amicably, and Arijit went on to lend his voice to Salman Khan starrers, including Tiger 3.
Arijit Singh began his musical journey as a contestant on the singing reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005. From a reality show participant to becoming one of the most celebrated playback singers in India, his rise has been widely regarded as extraordinary.
Apart from Hindi cinema, Arijit has also sung extensively in Bengali and Assamese films, and released independent music, highlighting his versatility across languages and genres.
Known for maintaining a low profile, Arijit leads a private personal life with his wife Koel Roy and their children, staying away from the spotlight despite his massive popularity.
