Mangaluru: Residents protest sudden blocking of NH U-turn near Planet SKS

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (NJC)

Mangaluru, Feb 5: Residents of Barebail, Vyasanagar, KPT, Yeyyady, and Kuntikan staged a protest in front of Planet SKS, a residential apartment, on the National Highway, opposing the sudden blocking of a major U-turn by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). While the authorities reportedly closed the U-turn citing frequent accidents and safety concerns, the residents argued that the step was taken without providing any alternative service road or proper public consultation.

The protesters stated that they are not against safety measures but questioned why the U-turn was shut without making arrangements for a parallel service road or regulated access. “If accidents were happening, the government could have introduced signals, speed control, or a service road. Simply closing the U-turn is not a solution,” a resident said.

According to the joint representation submitted by the locals, the closure was implemented without prior public notice, traffic impact assessment, or approval from the local administration and traffic police. The residents alleged that this unilateral decision has severely affected daily life in the surrounding localities.

They pointed out that emergency services such as ambulances and fire vehicles are facing delays, while students, working professionals, and senior citizens are forced to travel several extra kilometres to reach schools, offices, hospitals, and markets. The diversion has also led to increased fuel expenses, traffic congestion, and a higher risk of accidents on interior roads.

The demonstrators demanded that the authorities either reopen the U-turn or immediately construct a functional service road before enforcing such restrictions. They urged the district administration to intervene and find a practical solution that ensures both road safety and public convenience.

A memorandum was submitted to the concerned officials seeking urgent action. The residents warned that they would intensify the protest if a positive response is not received at the earliest.

This "U Turn" is very dangerous. In addition to U turn, the vehicle coming from Bejai New Road 7th Cross are also crossing the highway at 90degree to reach other side of the road, which is dangerous.

This is what happens when National highway cuts in between the city. There should have been a bypass readied when city expanded beyond older limits. When every other city gets a bypass to isolate highway trafic, why not Mangalore? Despite having MP's from ruling party since 3 terms and beyond. Central govt must respond to this biased treatment.

The entire Vyasanagar neighbourhood depends on this turn for daily access. If it is closed, residents coming from the city side (Nanthoor, Kadri, etc.) will have to travel nearly 4 km extra via the underpass after AJ just to enter the area. This leads to a significant waste of time and cost, especially for autos, school buses, and vans, many of whom are already reluctant to take this extended route. Moreover, since this blockage was put in place, the Kuntikana underpass (near AJ)itself became extremely chaotic. This raises a serious concern: does this measure actually solve a traffic issue, or does it simply shift and amplify the problem to another location? It proves that a proper Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) was likely not conducted before the closure, which is a procedural lapse on the part of the NHAI or concerned authority. According to IRC regulations too, in built-up areas where local access is cut off, the highway authority is expected to provide a service road to channelize local traffic to the nearest safe entry/exit point. Closing a median without providing a service road often forces people into "wrong-side driving," which creates an even bigger safety hazard. While we understand that median closure is done for safety, the Right to Life (Article 21) includes the right to reasonable access. Therefore, the authorities should be directed to build a service road to ensure the safety and rights of the residents are not compromised. "Reasonable Access" is not a luxury but a fundamental right. By forcing a 2 km detour (total 4 km) for basic entry, the authority is placing an "unreasonable burden" on the life and livelihood of the residents of Vyasanagar.

Only solution to this is: An intersection leading opposite to Vyas Nagar road on NH66 should be made as traffic going to FC Traffic department in and out will move smoothly. The present UTurn should be closed as cars, rickshaws, bikes, scooters coming from the down lane speeding on NH66 which is the main cause of accidents. Cameras should be installed on both sides as wrong side entry by Rickshaws, cars, scooters and bikers are made. Wrong entry from any side should be heavily penalized.

Placing the U turn lane before the KPT signal stop line allows vehicles to enter the median opening earlier, keeping signal junction traffic smooth and uninterrupted. This reduces queue length near the signal and improves overall road movement efficiency.

⸻ This U-turn has existed for several years and serves as a critical access point for residents of Vyasanagar, Barebail, KPT, and Udayanagar, covering over 2,000 homes and more than 5,000 residents. Abruptly restricting or removing this access without providing any alternative route has caused severe hardship and daily suffering to the local population. There is no viable alternate road for residents. The situation is further aggravated by the presence of the RTO inspection ground, which sees frequent movement of heavy vehicles, the AJ Hospital, and the Kadri Fire Station in close proximity. Emergency services, hospital access, and routine commuting have all been adversely impacted. Only residents who have lived here for 30+ years truly understand the ground reality and the practical difficulties caused by such unilateral decisions. Taking away an existing access that has been in continuous use for decades without consultation, planning, or an alternate service road is an ill-considered and irresponsible decision. Until a proper, safe, and functional alternative road is planned and implemented, any move to block or restrict this U-turn is unjustified, unsafe, and detrimental to public interest.

NHAI is not bothered about the local residents. The Highway inside the city is a liability and a death trap. It is to help Yama. So please protest that the highway is taken outside the city before mangalore gets totally destroyed.

. I agree that safety is important. However, if you are free, please come inside Vyasa Nagara once and see how many residents are actually living here. Also observe the condition of the connecting roads leading to Bare Bail and Vyasa Nagara. At present, to enter Vyasa Nagara, we are forced to go up to Kuntikana, turn back, and then enter. The area near the AJ service road is almost always congested, resulting in a complete waste of fuel and time for daily commuters. This situation clearly demands a proper service road or a flyover to manage the traffic flow efficiently. It is difficult to understand why authorities cannot construct a flyover at critical junctions like KPT and Padua–Nanthur, where it is genuinely required. In many other locations along the National Highway, kilometres of flyovers are constructed even where traffic pressure is comparatively low. But in places where congestion is severe, no proper solution is provided, causing continuous hardship to citizens. Even when the median is closed, traffic at KPT junction becomes unbearable during peak hours. People are forced to wait under the harsh sun for long periods, often alongside roadside beggars, making the situation extremely uncomfortable and frustrating. This issue needs immediate attention and a practical infrastructure solution rather than temporary traffic adjustments.
