Global Konknni Forum institutes 'Global Konknni Awards' on its first Foundation Day

Media Release

Margao, Feb 5: The Global Konknni Forum, on the occasion of its first Foundation Day, has announced the institution of the Global Konknni Awards to honour distinguished contributions to the promotion, preservation and enrichment of the Konkani language and culture in Roman script.

The awards comprise the Literary Award, Cultural Awards at international and national levels, the Konknni Seva Award and the Youth Award.

For the current year, the Forum has decided to confer the Literary Award on Manuel Fernandes; the Cultural Award (international level) on RJ Roque Vaz and Bihula Vaz; the Cultural Award (national level) on Marius Fernandes; the Konknni Seva Award on Natividade De Sa; and the Youth Award on Joshua Rocha Pereira.

Manuel Fernandes, a noted figure in the Konkani literary sphere, has made significant contributions towards preserving and enriching the Konkani language. His writings, sustained activism and lifelong commitment to Konkani literature continue to inspire generations.

RJ Roque Vaz and Bihula Vaz, recipients of the Cultural Award (international level), promote and popularise the Konkani language in the United Kingdom and Europe through Europe’s first and only Konkani FM radio programme, Konkani Uloi London Fuloi. Broadcast every Saturday on Awaaz 99.8 FM (Southampton, UK), the programme features a range of Konkani music, community news, cultural discussions, general knowledge segments and updates relevant to the Konkani community across the UK.

Marius Fernandes, popularly known as ‘Gõycho Festakar’, has for several years brought communities together to celebrate and revive Goa’s forgotten traditions and culture. His festivals, organised on the principles of love, inclusivity and zero sponsorship, include the Jackfruit Festival, Poderanchem Fest and the Ramponnkar Festival, all deeply rooted in Konkani language and heritage.

Natividade De Sa, a committed advocate of Konkani in Roman script, has played an important role in supporting various language-related initiatives and other Goan causes. Despite his advanced age, he continues to actively participate in Konkani programmes, inspiring many through his dedication.

The Youth Award, ‘Tornatto Puroskar’, instituted by the Global Konknni Forum to encourage young contributors to Konkani, is being conferred on Joshua Rocha Pereira for his contributions to Konkani language and culture through music and lyrics.

The award presentation ceremony will be held on February 12, 2026, at Black Box, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, commencing at 4.15 pm.

Prof Dr Sushila Sawant Mendes, Goan historian, researcher and author, will be the chief guest, while Fr Pio Furtado, headmaster of Fr Agnel High School, Pilar, will be the guest of honour.
