Shimla, Feb 5: In a major step aimed at improving the academic environment, Himachal Pradesh chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu on Thursday announced a complete ban on mobile phones in all government and private schools, effective March 1.

Under the new rule, students found carrying mobile phones will face a fine of Rs 500 and confiscation of the device. Additionally, parents will be required to attend mandatory school counselling sessions to reinforce compliance.

The announcement was made at the closing ceremony of the 69th National School Games Under-19 Girls Handball Tournament held in Ghumarwin, Bilaspur district. Addressing the gathering, CM Sukhu emphasized the government’s commitment to delivering world-class education, enabling local students to compete on a global level.

“It has been observed that mobile phone usage during school hours and lunch breaks distracts students from their studies and interpersonal development,” the Chief Minister said, reflecting on his own background as a product of a government school.

The Education Department has been tasked with drafting a standard operating procedure (SOP) to manage repeated violations and ensure long-term compliance with the ban and counselling requirements.

Beyond academics, CM Sukhu highlighted the state’s efforts to promote sports and sports tourism. He announced employment opportunities for women athletes from Himachal who have competed in the Asian Games, and a cash prize of Rs 20 lakh to celebrate the state team’s victory in the National Handball Championship.

The government has also increased daily diet allowances for student-athletes to Rs 400 for state-level events and Rs 500 for national-level competitions, with air travel arrangements provided for athletes traveling more than 200 km to competitions.

During the event, the Chief Minister outlined key infrastructure goals, including fast-tracking the completion of the indoor stadium in Ghumarwin, constructing a local school building within a year, and initiating a new girls’ hostel at Morsingi.

The 69th National School Games concluded with Himachal Pradesh winning the gold medal after defeating Rajasthan in the final, while Haryana secured third place. The tournament featured 30 teams from across India.
