Mangaluru: Brake failure on Kuppepadavu route; driver averts major mishap

Mangaluru, Feb 6: A major accident was narrowly averted on the Kuppepadavu–Kalladi–Poovanibettu–Mangaluru route on Wednesday, thanks to the alertness and presence of mind of a private bus driver.

The private bus, which had departed from Kuppepadavu towards Kalladi, suffered a brake failure while negotiating a downward curve at Neralike. Realising the danger, the driver, Vasu alias Ammi, acted swiftly and steered the bus towards the drain on the right side near a hillock, where the wheels got stuck, preventing a serious mishap.

As the bus was heading from Kuppepadavu to Poovanibettu, only a few passengers were on board at the time. Upon noticing the brake failure, the driver carefully assessed the situation. Since there were several houses located in a low-lying area on the left side of the road, he avoided that direction and instead manoeuvred the bus to the right, ensuring the safety of residents and passengers.

Thanks to his timely action, no passengers were injured, though the bus sustained damage. The driver’s decisive and responsible conduct has drawn widespread praise from the public.

Later, the damaged bus was lifted using a crane and moved to the roadside.

Brake failure is a lame defensive excuse for no or bad maintenance. The owner and drivers must be held accountable for safety of people. The Chalta Hai attitude must stop now now.
