Guwahati, Feb 8: Assam Congress president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday dismissed the renewed political focus on the Special Investigation Team (SIT), alleging that the controversy is being deliberately stirred up to distract the public from the BJP-led Assam government’s shortcomings in governance.
Questioning the timing of the issue’s resurgence, Gogoi suggested that such matters conveniently re-emerge whenever the ruling dispensation comes under pressure for failing to deliver on its promises. He described the SIT narrative as a politically motivated attempt to shift attention away from issues that have a direct bearing on people’s daily lives.
Speaking to the media, the Congress leader reiterated his faith in constitutional values and democratic institutions, asserting that he has nothing to hide. He said he would fully cooperate with any investigation carried out strictly within the ambit of the law.

“I have complete faith in the Constitution and in independent institutions. I welcome any lawful inquiry and will extend full cooperation. In the end, the truth will prevail,” Gogoi stated.
At the same time, he warned against the alleged politicisation of investigative agencies, stressing that their credibility depends on functioning independently and free from external influence. According to him, drawing such institutions into partisan political battles erodes public trust and weakens democratic foundations.
Gogoi further accused the state government of using controversy as a diversionary tactic to deflect attention from pressing concerns such as unemployment, rising prices, governance gaps, and unfulfilled development promises. He said the government should focus on addressing these challenges instead of indulging in what he termed “distraction politics.”
Emphasising the role of the Opposition, Gogoi said the Congress would continue to raise issues of public interest, transparency, and accountability, regardless of political pressure. Attempts to sideline genuine concerns, he added, would not deter the party from performing its democratic responsibility.
Calling for a more mature political discourse, Gogoi said democracy functions best when institutions are respected and governance remains centred on people’s needs. He urged the Assam government to prioritise development, job creation, and social welfare, stating that these remain the real challenges facing the state and the country.
