Kanpur Lamborghini crash sparks row over FIR, preferential treatment claims

Kanpur, Feb 9: The Lamborghini crash in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur took a fresh turn after police registered an FIR, even as a video purportedly showing the alleged driver stepping out of the luxury car raised questions over why his name does not feature in the case records.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening near the Gwal Toli area, where a Lamborghini allegedly veered off the road, mounted the footpath and hit pedestrians, injuring at least one person. The car also rammed into an autorickshaw before coming to a halt.

According to police, the injured pedestrian, identified as Taufiq Ahmed, was rushed to hospital and is currently in stable condition. Police initially claimed the driver lost control of the vehicle after suffering dizziness and a seizure. However, locals said the incident could have resulted in far more casualties given the speed and power of the vehicle.

Soon after the crash, videos surfaced on social media showing a man exiting the Lamborghini. Police sources identified him as Shivam, son of tobacco trader A K Mishra. Despite this, his name does not appear in the FIR, triggering public outrage and allegations of selective action. Police have not yet clarified the omission.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Atul Srivastava confirmed that an FIR has been registered based on a complaint and that the vehicle has been seized, but declined to comment on the absence of the alleged driver’s name in the FIR.

Further controversy erupted after visuals emerged from the police station showing the Lamborghini being covered with a sheet inside the premises, allegedly at the direction of police personnel. The footage also showed private bouncers, reportedly linked to the accused, standing guard near the car. Locals and the injured man’s family alleged that the bouncers misbehaved with them inside the police station, even as police officers failed to intervene.

The police have maintained that the medical claim of a seizure is under verification. “We are checking whether the person driving the vehicle has any history of seizures,” DCP Srivastava said.

Meanwhile, Taufiq Ahmed told police that he was standing on the footpath when the car suddenly mounted it and struck him. His family has demanded strict action, alleging preferential treatment and questioning the handling of the case.
