New Delhi, Feb 9: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over a controversial video allegedly shared by the BJP, accusing him of spreading communal hatred against Muslims.
Addressing a rally at Zaheerabad in Telangana, Owaisi said the video, which showed Sarma purportedly aiming a rifle at two individuals identified as minorities, reflected the persistence of communal poison in Indian politics. He announced that AIMIM would soon file a police complaint against the Assam chief minister over the video.

Owaisi alleged that the visuals, later deleted from social media after widespread backlash, depicted a person with a beard and skull cap being symbolically targeted. “This is a video posted from the BJP’s official handle. AIMIM strongly condemns it and will approach the police so that a case can be registered,” he said, accusing the Assam government of promoting hatred against Muslims.
The AIMIM leader also recalled Sarma’s earlier remarks about “troubling Miya Muslims”, terming them unconstitutional and divisive. Mocking the chief minister, Owaisi said such statements reduced governance to prejudice and intimidation, stressing that the Constitution guarantees equality and non-discrimination irrespective of religion.
He further alleged that Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam were being scapegoated for various issues, including migration and price rise, claiming that such rhetoric was being used for political gain in the election-bound state.
Sarma’s remarks and the now-deleted video have triggered a political storm, with opposition parties accusing the BJP of resorting to communal polarisation. The BJP, however, has maintained that its actions in Assam are aimed at addressing illegal immigration and safeguarding indigenous rights.
