Mangaluru, Feb 9: The discovery of an unidentified body in the Phalguni river near Annodi has sent shockwaves, with initial evidence pointing towards a possible murder.

The incident came to light on Sunday, February 8, at around 2 pm when a resident, Riyas Ferrao, was heading towards his house on the KIOCL-Thokur road. He noticed a body floating in the river near the KISCO gate and immediately alerted the police.

Upon receiving the information, the police arrived at the spot and retrieved the body by 2.30 pm. Due to being submerged for an estimated seven to eight days, the body was found in a highly decomposed state with the skin peeling off.

Suspicion of foul play arose when officials observed that a shoe lace was tied tightly around the neck of the deceased, with the other end fastened to an interlock stone. While no other visible injury marks could be identified due to the advanced state of decomposition, the manner in which the stone was attached suggests an attempt to keep the body submerged and hide the crime.

The deceased is estimated to be aged between 45 and 50 years. Based on the complaint filed by Riyas Ferrao expressing suspicion that unidentified persons may have strangled the man and disposed of the body, the police have initiated a probe.

A case has been registered and further investigations are underway to identify the victim and track down the culprits.
