Kochi, Feb 15: When it comes to the legends of Malayalam cinema, few names shine as brightly as Nambiathuseril Varkey John, better known by his screen name J Sasikumar. Often hailed as the industry’s ultimate “Hitmaker,” Sasikumar played a pivotal role in the box-office rise of Malayalam films during the 1960s and ’70s, launching careers of several actors and leaving an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape.
Interestingly, Sasikumar initially dreamt of becoming an actor. Drawing from his theatre background, he approached Udaya Studios, owned by veteran filmmaker Kunchacko, hoping to make a mark in front of the camera. Despite appearing in films like Vishappinte Vili, Thiramala, and Oral Koodi Kallanayi, he soon realised that acting might not be his calling.
It was then that Sasikumar found his true calling behind the camera. His early break came as a co-director with ace filmmaker P.A. Thomas in hits like Kudumbini (1964) and Porter Kunjali (1965). He made his independent directorial debut with Jeevithayaathra, and followed it up with successes like Thommante Makkal, establishing a new era in Malayalam cinema.
Over a career spanning more than three decades, Sasikumar directed an astonishing 141 films, reportedly second only to Dasari Narayana Rao in India. Notably, 84 of his films starred Prem Nazir, Malayalam’s biggest superstar, with 67 movies featuring the Nazir-Sheela duo. His productivity was unmatched, directing a record 15 films in a single year (1977).
Sasikumar’s ingenuity extended beyond numbers. He once developed a story and screenplay overnight to meet a producer’s urgent schedule, resulting in the blockbuster Post Mortem (1982), starring Prem Nazir, Mammootty, and Sukumaran. This incident exemplifies his unparalleled dedication and creative energy.
J Sasikumar’s films defined an era, blending commercial appeal with storytelling that resonated with audiences. His seamless collaboration with stars, rapid production pace, and ability to craft hits virtually overnight cemented his reputation as a cinematic magician. Even decades later, his influence continues to inspire filmmakers and actors in the Malayalam film industry.
