Sangeeta files for divorce from Vijay after 25 years of marriage

Daijiworld Media Network - Chennai

Chennai, Feb 27: Sangeeta Sornalingam, wife of actor Vijay, has filed a petition seeking divorce, bringing an end to over 25 years of marriage.

The couple, who tied the knot in August 1999, have two children — Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha. The petition has been filed under provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954 before the District Court.

According to the plea, Sangeeta has alleged that Vijay was involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress. The petition states that she discovered in 2021 that the respondent was engaged in an adulterous relationship, which became the foundation for seeking legal separation.

The plea further claims that despite assurances from Vijay that the relationship would be ended, it allegedly continued without remorse. These allegations form the basis of the divorce petition filed under Section 27(1)(a) and Section 27(1)(d) of the Act, which provide for dissolution of marriage on grounds including adultery and cruelty.

Under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, a spouse may seek divorce if the other party is found to have committed adultery or subjected them to cruelty. Sangeeta’s petition cites both grounds in the ongoing proceedings.

The matter is currently pending before the District Court, and the outcome is awaited.
