Lucknow, Mar 4: It was a moment of pride and celebration for Rohit Singhal, a resident of Lucknow and a manager at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in Mumbai, as he secured All India Rank (AIR) 70 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024.
An IT engineering graduate, Rohit made a strategic shift in his preparation journey by opting for Public Administration as his optional subject. Explaining his choice, he said that the selection of an optional subject is deeply personal and should align with one’s interests and strengths.

“UPSC does not offer my graduation subject (IT) in the list of optional subjects. Engineering graduates like me often find humanities relatively easier and less time-consuming for preparation,” Rohit said.
He revealed that his decision to opt for public administration was influenced by his college seniors. “During my college days, my seniors guided me to choose public administration as an optional subject. They sensed my interest in geopolitics and diplomacy, which further strengthened my inclination towards the subject,” he said.
Despite qualifying for the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Rohit has expressed his desire to join the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). “Even though I have qualified for IAS, I will choose IFS, as I have always been inclined towards it,” he stated, underlining his passion for international relations and diplomacy.
Rohit was associated with Lukmaan IAS for his preparation, which played a supportive role in his success journey.
Rohit Singhal’s journey highlights the importance of choosing subjects based on genuine interest rather than trends. His story reflects how clarity of goals, strategic decision-making, and consistent preparation can help aspirants achieve top ranks.
From managing responsibilities at RBI to earning a top national rank, Rohit’s success stands as an inspiring example for thousands of UPSC aspirants across the country — proving that with determination, right guidance, and focused preparation, even the toughest examinations can be conquered.
